Learning is different for adult students. Adults have different brains and a lot more information filling them. To really succeed with your guitar studies, the first step is to let go of the idea that “guitar lessons” will work for you the way they do when you send your 12-year-old to the neighborhood music store.
We may not have the neuroplasticity, the freedom to explore, and the flexible bodies we had when we were kids. And sometimes, the more history you have, the more time you’ve had to acquire and reinforce bad habits. But what we DO have is a capacity for deeper focus, and better developed problem-solving skills.
Whether you’re a true newcomer to the guitar or a “perpetual beginner” with more experience than skill, the first step to improving your playing is to develop a clear mental picture of what your hands are and aren’t doing. You can’t solve a problem you can’t see. Once we have that more detailed understanding, we can begin to find solutions.
The free Guitar Mechanic mini-course series is designed to get you started in your guitar reassessment by focusing on four cardinal points:
Fret hand freedom: the stepping stone method
Picking hand movement: arcs and curves
Internalizing rhythm: pulse and pattern
Playing with dynamics: more and less, bigger and smaller
Each six-lesson section will walk you through a set of simple exercises that spotlight technical fundamentals and introduce a practice process. At the end, we’ll be ready to continue a conversation about your individual practice goals, and how to best make use of the extensive TrueFire library of on-demand courses.
